Fieldfisher is to run its first vacation scheme in its Manchester office.

The London-headquartered firm has had a presence in Manchester in 2004 but only significantly expanded there in 2014 through a merger with local firm Heatons, taking the number of partners from one to eight.

It is looking to take on its one or two trainees in the North from September 2018 and as such is currently recruiting for its first Manchester vacation schemers.

The two-week vacation schemes will run over Easter and in the summer and mirror the London one, with students spending time in one department. Fieldfisher recruitment advisor Mathieu Pinto Cardoso told Lawyer 2B this exposes vac schemers to “much better quality work and helps them develop better relationships within the firm” than if they moved around departments.

Cardoso said the number of places on the vacation schemes is open to flexibility, but the firm expects to take three or four on each. The deadline to apply is 15 January.

A number of firms have started new Manchester training contracts in recent years.

TLT launched one in 2014, while Nabarro – soon to merge with Olswang and CMS – took its first Manchester NQ in 2015.

Last April Lawyer 2B revealed that Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer looking into offering training contracts in Manchester, though the firm said this is unlikely to happen in the short term.
