European moves: 22 March 2012

All the latest partner hires and other appointments within Continental European firms and offices.


Baker & McKenzie has hired Sandrine Leclercq as a lawyer in its Luxembourg office. Leclercq joins the firm from Caceis Bank, where she was global general counsel. She will work with the funds and financial services teams. 

Loyens & Loeff has hired Nauta Dutilh consultant Martijn Rongen. Rongen joins Loyens’ Amsterdam office as a lawyer in the banking and finance team. He focuses on securitisation work.

Central & Eastern Europe

Romanian firm Ţuca Zbârcea & Asociaţii has launched a tax consultancy division, a separate legal entity to the law firm, combining lawyers, tax advisors and former Ministry of Public Finance experts. The core team consists of five certified tax consultants who have spent the past 8 to 10 years at “Big 4” accountancy firms. Five other attorneys experienced in tax law and related contentious disputes are also part of the team. The team will be headed by Ţuca founding partner Răzvan Gheorghiu-Testa, along with Alexandru Cristea who joins the new entity as a tax partner from Deloitte.


French energy giant EDF has appointed Eric Thomas as its new group general counsel (13 March 2012). Thomas, previously general counsel for aerospace and defence company Thales, joined EDF in mid-February. He is a member of the company’s executive committee and will report to general secretary Alain Tchernonog.

De Pardieu Brocas Maffei has established a Chinese desk with the hire of a lawyer from Chinese firm Allbright Law Offices (19 March 2012). Ghislain de Mareuil joins De Pardieu as a counsel after two years as a foreign legal consultant at Allbright in Shanghai.

US firm Dechert has hired Gide Loyrette Nouel senior associate Antoine Sarailler as a national partner in Paris. Sarailler, who joins Dechert after more than 10 years at Gide, will be a member of the firm’s financial services group. He focuses on asset management.

Flichy Grangé Avocats has appointed Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer counsel Stéphanie Guedes da Costa as a partner. Guedes da Costa advises on litigation and employment matters. Flichy Grangé has also announced the promotion of associate Cyprien Pialoux to partner and Charlotte Michaud to counsel.

Marccus Partners has appointed tax specialist Jean-Laurent Anglade as a partner. Anglade has most recently been a sole practitioner, having begun his career at Arthurt Andersen and then Ernst & Young.

French employment firm Capstan has promoted associates Aurélien Louvet and Geoffroy de Raincourt to partner. The promotions bring the number of partners at the firm to 37.


Salans has hired Peter Homberg from German firm Raupach & Wollert-Elmendorff to boost its IP team in Frankfurt. Homberg was previously head of Raupach’s life sciences practice group. He focuses on the pharmaceutical, diagnostics and biotechnology industry.

Dechert has strengthened its Frankfurt office with the hire of a partner from Fried Frank (19 March 2012). Corporate lawyer Sven Schulte-Hillen was previously managing partner of Fried Frank in Frankfurt, having founded the office in 2004.


Bonelli Erede Pappalardo has appointed senior partner Andrea Carta Mantiglia as its new London managing partner (13 March 2012). M&A specialist Carta Mantiglia will split his time between London and Milan.

Hogan Lovells has hired a restructuring team from DLA Piper’s Rome office. Business restructuring partner Ernesto Apuzzo, associates Alessandra Dima and Francesco Gallo and trainee Michela Palombi all moved to Hogan Lovells earlier this month.

Italian employment boutique Lablaw has promoted senior associates Carlo Majer and Nicolò Schittone to partner. The promotions bring Lablaw’s partnership to 13.


Swedish firm Setterwalls has hired VAT specialist Marie Hedin from Maqs Law Firm. Hedin has become a specialist counsel within the Setterwalls tax group. The hire follows significant growth in the firm’s tax practice.

Russia & CIS

Ukraine firm Pavlenko & Poberezhnyuk Law Group has hired Wolf Theiss associate Valeriya Tarasenko as a counsel to lead its tax and financial advisory practice. Tarasenko has worked on the tax aspects of a number of major M&A transactions at firms including Baker & McKenzie.


Sidley Austin has recruited Minter Ellison partner Iain Sandford as a counsel in its Geneva-based international trade practice. Sandford was previously head of the Australian firm’s international trade group and has previously worked with the World Trade Organisation and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
