“Drafting contracts is central to lawyers’ work. Clients want contracts to be clear, relevant and easy to use.

The Trainer

Introducing Ben Staveley

Ben is a writing and contract drafting consultant. He studied English and Law at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before joining Freshfields (now Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer) in 1979.  Ben was a partner in the firm between 1987 and 2002, and led an initiative to promote clearer writing and drafting throughout the firm.

Ben now advises law firms and other business organisations on the principles of clear writing and effective contract drafting, and also lectures at universities. He has recently published his first book, a short guide for lawyers entitled ‘Faultless Grammar’.

The course consists of nine core modules with associated reading materials.

Utilised and adapted from Ben’s consultancy work, this course covers the full breadth of drafting best practice. Contracts have to be clearly structured at an overall level, clear at the level of each clause or paragraph and clear at the level of detailed language.

Each module will be accompanied by an educational and instructional video, additional reading materials and short quizzes to conclude and evaluate your knowledge on the teachings. The modules must be taken in the order that is listed below and all nine modules must be completed to receive the certificate at the end of the course.
