Edwards Angell launches Euro patent team

US firm Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge has launched a European patent prosecution practice in London just months after merging with UK firm Kendall Freeman.

The firm has hired life sciences patent attorney Candi Soames from IP firm D Young & Co, along with a team of four paralegals specialising in biotechnology.

Solicitors and patent attorneys cannot be members of the same partnership for regulatory reasons, and so Soames will be a partner in a separate UK limited-liability partnership (LLP) called EAPD Innovations LLP.

Laurence Harris, managing partner of Edwards Angell’s London, said: “This underlines our commitment to life sciences in Europe. We see very significant opportunities for a practice of lawyers and patent attorneys focusing together in the life sciences area in Europe.”

Soames will be based in London, but Edwards Angell has set up a representative office in Southampton to support the patent practice, housing a handful of feeearners and back office staff.

In March the firm launched its London life sciences practice with the hire of Reed Smith Richards Butler IP partner Rajita Sharma.
