DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary has defeated New York’s real estate elite to secure a glamour instruction to advise the Port Authority of New York on the redevelopment of the World Trade Centre site.
The firm, led by New York partner Martin Polevoy, secured the instruction last month following a competitive tender process. It is the first time the firm has been retained by the port authority, which is overseeing the estimated $7bn (£3.65bn) redevelopment of the former site of the Twin Towers.
The redevelopment will see the construction of the Daniel Libeskind-designed Freedom Tower, as well as a new $2bn (£1.04bn) transportation hub, including a new Trans-Hudson ferry terminal and new pedestrian connections to accommodate 250,000 commuters daily.
DLA Piper will advise the port authority on all the real estate development aspects relating to the site.
Polevoy moved to the former Piper Rudnick last January from Swindler Berlin Shereff Friedman. Prior to this, he was name partner at highly regarded New York real estate boutique Bachner Tally Polevoy & Misher. His team has proved a fillip for DLA Piper since joining, bringing with it the instruction to advise The New York Times on its relocation to new 1.6-million-square-foot, state-of-the-art premises designed by Renzo Piano.
The New York Port Authority has previously instructed a range of firms, including Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom on real estate, as well as a raft of boutiques on litigation matters. High-profile Skadden partner Martha Feltenstein previously advised the port authority on real estate issues relating to the World Trade Centre both before and after 11 September.
