Dechert has made a dramatic swoop on US firm Swidler Berlin’s New York office, with a mass hire of 57 corporate and litigation lawyers, including 27 partners from Swidler Berlin’s New York office. A further eight lawyers will join Dechert from the firm’s Washington DC headquarters.
Swidler has vowed to continue to focus on real estate and finance work.
Commenting on the mass defection Swidler Berlin’s managing partner Barry Direnfeld said the restructure was part of a long term strategic plan after the merger between Swidler & Berlin and Shereff Friedman Hoffman & Goodman in 1998 had not worked out as planned.
“We are pleased to that we are able to accomplish this in a way that makes it a winning arrangement for all our partners,” he added.
Meanwhile, Swidler Berlin’s Washington arm will concentrate on the growth of its core practice areas of strength including government affairs, telecoms, insurance, real estate, corporate and finance.
