Essex Court chambers

Grief entered the clerking fraternity aged 17 as a result of his father's friendship with silk Pete Goodfellow QC, at the chambers now known as 4-5 Gray's Inn Square. Within six months, he had been elevated to the position of first junior (basically the deputy to the senior clerk), a leap that could take anything from five years to a lifetime to achieve in today's world. In 1977 he left to become senior clerk at 17 Old Buildings to replace Paul Shrubsall, who in turn was off to join One Essex Court, before joining his present set in 1980. He now manages a team of 12 clerks, assisted by first junior Jo Ferrigno, one of three team leaders. Grief is paid a retainer with a percentage on top.
