SmartLaw 2.0 – The new future of law

By Brett Chalmers A few years ago, George Beaton published an influential e-book, NewLaw New Rules: A Conversation About the Future of the Legal Services Industry, that pulled together comments and responses he received from numerous legal thought leaders and experts about his NewLaw-focused blog post. The publication compared BigLaw, the traditional partnership-and-hourly-rates model, with NewLaw, an […]

Lively times are predicted for the pensions scene. The new pensions ombudsman Julian Farrand QC made this quite clear when talking to the Association of Pensions Lawyers last week. They claim Employment Secretary Michael Portillo’s acceptance of the ruling was “inevitable” and tribunals had already begun adapting the law to […]

Lawyers have say on legal aid for the rich

LAWYERS have until the end of next month to respond to the Lord Chancellor’s package of measures designed to prevent rich people milking the legal aid fund. The Bar Council and the Law Society have broadly welcomed the plans but could object to individual proposals. Society president Charles Elly says that turning legal aid into […]

Reorganisation cash

Reorganised local authorities will be able to apply for supplementary credit approvals to provide additional funds to cover the costs of implementing reorganisation, the Government has announced. The first authorities invited to apply for the funding will be the Isle of Wight and councils in Cleveland, Avon, North Yorkshire and Humberside.

Food for thought

Just as the Northern Ireland framework document is supposedly not a blueprint, Labour’s ‘Access to justice’ consultation paper is labelled ‘not a statement of party policy’. It is a rummage through the legal system and ‘you tell us what should be on the shopping list’ approach. Legal issues at all levels are on the political […]
