Cloisters to set up base in Manchester

CLOISTERS Chambers is the first London set to open for business in Manchester.

The opening of premises in St John Street makes the chambers, headed by David Turner-Samuels QC, the latest in a wave of provincial moves by London sets. "We're getting more and more work from the big cities of the North," senior barrister Philip Engelman says.

"The new chambers will provide a strategic base for access to Leeds, Newcastle and Sheffield. We see ourselves as supplementing rather than competing directly with the local Bar in Manchester," he says.

The new Cloisters Chambers will provide two conference rooms. The move will take place in the new year.

"There is an increasing amount of work in both the criminal and commercial courts here so we can comfortably absorb them," Alistair Webster, executive committee member of the Northern Circuit, says.
