Cleary adds to City competition team with OFT hire

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton has boosted its London office with the hire of the deputy director of competition policy at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT).

Paul Gilbert will join Cleary’s London office as an associate on 17 January, becoming a member of the competition team. Gilbert joined the OFT in 2009, after working at Slaughter and May, where he began his career.

Gilbert’s hire follows Cleary competition partner Maurits Dolmans’ move from the firm’s Brussels office to London. Cleary now has three partners in its London competition practice: Dolmans, Romano Subiotto QC and Nicholas Levy, who work with a team of 12 associates on UK competition law.

“Maurits is one of the best known competition law practitioners in Europe with extraordinary experience of a wide array of antitrust cases, in particular in the high tech sector,” said Levy. “Maurits’ move to London and Paul’s decision to join us considerably strengthen and deepen our London group and will greatly assist in growing the practice.”

In February, Cleary lost London competition partner Shaun Goodman to Howrey (2 February 2010).
