A former City lawyer who is now a Member of Parliament has been suspended from his party and referred to the police following “serious allegations” made against him.

The Conservatives withdrew the party whip from Charlie Elphicke, the MP for Dover and Deal. The nature of the allegations have not been specified and Elphicke denies any wrongdoing.

Before being elected to Parliament in 2010, Elphicke was a partner at Reed Smith and then briefly Mayer Brown, before becoming head of European tax at Hunton & Williams.

Westminster has been rocked in the past week, with allegations of sexual harassment leveled at a variety of MPs.

Defence Secretary Micheal Fallon resigned his position over the allegations, while Labour MPs Kelvin Hopkins and Jared O’Mara have also had the whip withdrawn.
