CC associates gain skills set boost

Clifford Chance is overhauling its London capital markets practice in an attempt to boost associates’ experience and project management skills.

The magic circle firm is to widen its capital markets practice to include its debt and equity capital markets, structured debt and corporate trusts groups.

Clifford Chance London head of capital markets David Bickerton told The Lawyer: “We are partly doing this to ensure that our lawyers get the broadest capital markets experience in the London market.

“It will also enable us to split the transactions up more clearly between the relevant skills sets, enabling associates to manage transactions in a more efficient manner, putting less pressure on them. It will also give clients more of what they need.”

Last year the firm introduced the concept of career development partners. Bickerton explained: “You need to know what associates want and how they see their relationship with the firm. You must react to that.

“Each associate now has a dedicated career development partner, whose responsibility is to ensure that the associate’s career expectations and training requirements are prioritised.”

The move, which is expected to take place formally in May, will create a capital markets group consisting of 29 partners and 110 lawyers.
