R v Secretary of State for the Home Department ex parte Gavin Mellor (4/4/01) CA

It was held that it is not a violation of the appellant's human rights to be refused to be allowed to artificially inseminate his wife. This was one of a number of human rights claims brought by prisoners. The court found that IR35, the legislation that sought to eliminate the avoidance of income tax and national insurance contributions by the use of service companies, did not infringe the human rights of service contractors, nor was it incompatible with provisions of the EC Treaty.
