Careering ahead

Career development issues are front and centre in this issue of The Lawyer Management.

This week’s story about trainees at a number of US firms being given short shrift when it comes to training contracts has put the spotlight firmly on all things careers related.

It’s becoming a recurring theme in The Lawyer Management, which recently highlighted the growing number of redundancies across the UK as firms cut costs and in some cases go to the wall, with the most recent example coming in Scotland last week with the collapse of Semple Fraser.

But not everything is grim. As we report today, Reed Smith’s commercially focused LPC tie-up with BPP Law School, which has proved hugely popular with the firm’s junior lawyers, will be available from September on the open market.

Meanwhile allow Motive Legal’s Mark Brandon to try to persuade you to look at your career from an alternative angle. Amid all this talk of reduced training contracts and redundancies, try to consider whether working in the legal market is right for you in the first place. As Brandon points out, there might just be an alternative career out there, but it requires one thing: passion.

And talking of passion, the categories for The Lawyer Management awards, the event that will crown our inaugural conference this September, are now online. It’s free to enter. All we ask is for a charity donation to our chosen charity. And, as Brandon might put it, a bit of passion.
