BLP matches magic circle NQ salary rate

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) is the latest mid market firm to raise its newly qualified solicitor (NQ) salary band to close to magic circle rates.

The firm has increased its NQ pay rate by 4.84 per cent to £65,000. This matches Allen & Overy‘s NQ rate, which was frozen at £65,000 this year, and comes in just behind Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer‘s and Clifford Chance‘s, which came in at £66,000 and £66,600 respectively.

The salary growth rate for BLP’s trainee solicitors was much faster than at the NQ level, with first-year trainee solicitors seeing a rise of 12.12 per cent to £37,000. Second year trainee solicitors have seen salaries increase by 11.11 per cent to £40,000.

Other mid-market firms to increase NQ rates recently include Olswang, which backtracked on an earlier pay freeze to offer an increase of 2.4 per cent to £63,500 (The Lawyer, 11th June).
