BHP Billiton has appointed Freehills’ managing partner Mike Ferraro as its chief legal counsel following the retirement of John Fast last June.
Ferraro, who will take up his new role on January 2008, will be reporting to BHP chief executive office Marius Kloopers.
“Ferraro has a strong record of providing strategic commercial and legal advice across a number of industries and on a range of issues,” said Kloppers.
He said the mix of Ferraro’s legal and investment banking experience will be a valuable addition to the team.
Ferraro, who has been with Freehills since 1991, will be based in the company’s Melbourne office.
The resource company has used Blake Dawson Waldron and Allens Arthur Robinson for Australian legal matters, Slaughter and May for UK work and Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz for US-related work in the past.
