Sir Keir Starmer QC has been handed the post of shadow Brexit Secretary in Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet reshuffle.

The former Director for Public Prosecutions will line up opposite Conservative MP David Davis as Britain seeks to exit the European Union.

Starmer, who was elected as MP for Holborn and St Pancras in 2015, is a rising star in the party and was the subject of a grassroots campaign by Labour activists to propel him to the leadership after the party lost last year’s election.

He backed the Remain side in the referendum and has been vocal in defending the European Court of Human Rights and the Human Rights Act.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer and former director of Liberty Shami Chakrabarti has been made shadow Attorney General.

She was made a peer earlier in 2015, after she conducted an inquiry into alleged anti-Semitism in Labour.

Former trade union lawyer Richard Burgon remains Corbyn’s shadow Lord Chancellor, after being handed the role in June.
