Another Freshfields partner departs

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has lost a litigation partner in Frankfurt after Gunhild Schäfer was appointed a lawyer at the highest German civil law court.

The German secretary of justice, the Bundesjustizministerium, has admitted Schäfer to the small group of lawyers allowed to represent clients at the top level, called the Bundesgerichtshof.

The group currently numbers fewer than 50 lawyers. Under German bar rules, Schäfer cannot be a partner and a Bundesgerichtshof lawyer at the same time and so will leave Freshfields.

Manfred Finken, Germany managing partner, said: “It’s an honour for our firm that a partner from our ranks has been granted that admission. We’re very pleased for her and proud of her success.”

Schäfer has been at Freshfields since 1993 and a partner since 1997. She specialises in construction and engineering disputes. Her departure leaves Freshfields with 53 partners in Frankfurt.
