Actress gets £5m for superbug infection

Russell Cooke and Weightmans reached a settlement that will see actress Leslie Ash receive £5m compensation for contracting a superbug infection at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Ash contracted MSSA – a strain of MRSA – after being admitted to the hospital with a punctured lung and two cracked ribs in April 2004. Ash said the injuries were a result of falling off her bed and on to a table while making love.

The star of Men Behaving Badly walks with a stick more than three years after contracting the infection.

Simeon Maskrey QC of Seven Bedford Row acted as lead counsel for Ash, who instructed Janice Gardner, head of personal injury at Russell Cooke.

Neil Block QC of 39 Essex Street was instructed by Weightmans partner Rena Field for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
