Leeds set Zenith Chambers is the latest set to embrace the role of chief executive, with the retirement of practice director Rob Butchard prompting the move.
Butchard, who has spent 47 years as a clerk, will stand down in March 2010 after 10 years at the set. He said any successor would need to consider implementing changes related to the bar and the Legal Services Act.
“The bar’s going to be operating under a very different regime in five years,” he said. “The timing is critical - in another five years I’ll be 68 and I’d rather go when they need me than stay until they want me out.”
