Wragge & Co has gone against the grain to disband technology media and telecoms (TMT) groups with a new technology team in anticipation of an upturn.
The group will have 60 lawyers, including 18 Wragges partners, drafted in from other areas of the practice. Four corporate partners, including TMT M&A head Ian Metcalfe, have been drafted in. IT litigator Eddie Breen will also join with a view to giving the group dispute resolution expertise. The group will be led by respected intellectual property and IT lawyer Bill Jones, who says: "Clients want sector-focused teams in their law firms and they want a broad service, so it was an obvious move." The move is in line with Wragges' strategy of grouping lawyers in sector-focused teams. With the bursting of the dotcom bubble, other law firms have shuffled resources away from TMT back into other practice areas, such as corporate. However, Jones emphasised that Wragges is planning for the future and "getting ready for recovery when it comes".
