Wragge & Co has been appointed to the first-ever legal panel for Airwave, a company that helps the police and security services communicate without fear of eavesdroppers.
IP partner Gordon Harris will lead a team providing full-service advice to Airwave. While the firm does not have any previous relationship with the Airwave legal team, it was known to the company through its advice to Airwave’s former parent O2.
Harris told The Lawyer: “It’s nice to act for clients who are at the cutting edge. This is exactly the kind of work we want to be doing.”
Airwave provides secure communications technology to public sector clients, including the MoD and fire and ambulance services. It also works with private security companies, including those involved in prisoner transport and football ground security.
The other appointee is longstanding adviser Bird & Bird, which recently assisted Airwave on a contract to be provider of private mobile radio services for the 2012 Olympics. The client partner is Nick Perry.
Airwave senior legal counsel Paul Boyle, who oversaw the panel selection process, said: “We were hugely impressed with the quality of the responses from the 12 firms we invited to tender, which made the selection process extremely difficult.”
