Wragges ally Graf goes it alone in Shanghai" />German firm Graf von Westphalen is opening an office in Shanghai to complement its joint ventures with best friend Wragge & Co in Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
Graf von Westphalen has entered Shanghai to focus on acting for German medium-sized enterprises, which are particularly active in the region.
Graf von Westphalen's managing partner Barbara Mayer commented: "Hong Kong is the finance centre in China, Guangzhou is the work bench and Shanghai is the area where German businesses are active.
"We therefore agreed with Wragges that we would focus our strength. Wragges will concentrate on the traditionally English South [of China] and we on the North where the German mid-sized businesses are."
The new office will be headed by Stefan Peters, who was previously responsible for the China desk in Squire Sanders' Frankfurt office. Peters has studied in Taiwan and Wuhan and understands the local law and language.
The firm will be one of only a handful of German independents with a presence in the Shanghai. It is opening the office with its French ally Lefevre Pelletier.
