What was your first-ever job?
Saturdays in the warehouse at BHS. After a year I was promoted to selling light fittings.
What was your worst experience as a trainee?
Dropping a disclosure bundle and mixing up 300 pages of carefully prepared papers for the senior partner.
Where’s the best place to go if you want to find out what’s really going on in the office?
Anywhere the secretaries are.
What do you do at weekends?
Try to help my children remember who I am after so little contact during the week.
What’s your favourite restaurant?
Ferrari’s at Quorn, near Loughborough.
If you weren’t a lawyer what would you have been?
Who’s your hero and why?
Two former senior partners, Adrian Weston and Roger Bowder, both of whom had the knack of knowing what clients wanted and understood how best to deliver it.
What’s the best thing about your job?
What’s the toughest thing about your job?
The conflicting priorities.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what two luxury items would you take?
Sorry, I’d take three – a case of good shiraz, a pack of chilli McCoys and a bottle of Lucozade (the perfect hangover cure).
What’s the worst partner conference location you’ve attended and why?
A drab hotel near Hinckley.
The food was poor, the décor miserable and I drank so much on the Friday night that I woke up an hour after the Saturday session started.
If a movie was being made about your life, which actor would play you and why?
Liam Neeson, because I’m not good-looking enough to be George Clooney.
Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with and why?
Yvette Cooper and her civil servants from 2008. I met them and was astonished how little ministers and their entourage knew about what was going on in the real economy.
Tell us two truths and one lie about yourself (in any order)
I never swear; I’m exceptionally patient; I lost a stone in weight while on gardening leave.
