Withy King

UK Top 200 position: 132

Bath-headquartered Withy King has offices in Oxford, Swindon, Abingdon, Thame, Marlborough and London.

Turnover rose to £15.8m in 2011–12 — a performance largely attributed to the firm’s high-performing clinical negligence practice, which contributed 47 per cent of overall revenue.

Average profit per equity partner was £226,000, while net profit to be distributed among the 19 full-equity partners was £4.3m.

Following a structural review, Withy King now has a 49-strong partnership, with an even split of 19 full-equity and 19 fixed-share partners sharing the equity. The latter’s remuneration starts at 25 equity points as long as they control a fee income in excess of £300,000. Full-equity partners must control a fee income in excess of £500,000 and start at 250 points. The equity spread was from £95,000 to £344,000.

Withy King is investing in certain practice areas and making strategic hires including bringing in two laterals to its Oxford office, which it acquired off the back of a merger with Marshall & Galpin in 2008.

Employment partner Mark Emery joined the Oxford office in July 2011 and Tom Gilman joined in November 2011 to head up its private client practice.
