Withers to create global network

Withers is looking to formalise its international contacts in an effort to win more multijurisdictional work.

Adam Duthie, head of the European commercial practice, said the firm is examining ways of developing an international referral network.

“We’re looking at developing a referral network this year,” Duthie confirmed. “This would be an alternative model for cross-border referrals. There’s a balance to be struck because if you’re not seen as being too big the magic circle will refer work to you. We need to be sensitive to that, but at the same time we need a global network.”

Withers is in the throes of bolstering its commercial practice. This week it hired Denis Petkovic as head of its international finance and projects practice. Petkovic joins from US firm Pillsbury, where he was head of the European and Middle East practices.

Duthie commented: “What we’re trying to do, what our aspiration is, is to stand shoulder to shoulder with our well-regarded private client team.”

The strategy, he said, was being driven by Withers’ management, chairman Anthony Indaimo and managing director Margaret Robertson, who both have corporate backgrounds.

“Their seniority reflects the priorities of the firm and how it would like to move forward,” Duthie said.
