Withers has hired partner Simon Michaels from Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) for its wealth planning practice in Singapore.
Michaels will join Withers’ Singapore office, which opened in May 2012 (25 July 2011), in January 2013. He helped establish BLP’s private client practice in its Singapore office after joining the City firm from Baker & McKenzie’s Singapore member firm in 2010.
Michaels is experienced in advising ultra-high-net-worth individuals and their related trusts, controlled companies and businesses across South East Asia. His practice will focus on tax and wealth planning.
He will be the third partner of Withers’ Singapore office alongside Jay Krause and Gez Owen. The appointment in Singapore follows the recent relocation of US tax and wealth planning partner Erik Wallace from London to Hong Kong.
It is understood that BLP’s London-based private client partner Simon Phelps will spend more time in Singapore while the firm rethinks its recruitment strategy for the region.
