Kilpatrick Stockton's Swedish office has been decimated by the defection of four partners and two associates to rival Wistrand
The split highlights the firm's problems since its Swedish launch just over a year ago. Kilpatrick partner Torbjorn Hultsberg said the departures were due to "differences of opinion in how things should be managed".
Kilpatrick launched in Stockholm in 1999 with teams from Linklaters and Ernst & Young (E&Y), and it is the whole E&Y team that has departed. The departures leave Kilpatrick with just three partners and eight associates.
Meanwhile, Wistrand, which opened in Stockholm in the same month, now boasts a 41-lawyer practice, including 19 partners, following the arrival of the Kilpatrick team. The firm, established in Gothenburg in the early 20th century, has an additional 28 lawyers in Gothenburg and seven in Malmo.
The departing team initially joined Kilpatrick to build an intellectual property and IT practice, partner Robert Kullgren told The Lawyer, but a series of real estate hires and perceived bureaucracy from the US left the team disillusioned.
