Indonesian firm Wiriadinata & Widyawan has lost a chunk of its practice after five lawyers left to set up an association with Herbert Smith.
The lawyers have left the Jakarta-based practice and have established their own firm Hiswara Bunjamin & Tandjung (HBT). Wiriadinata has had a 12-year association with Australia's Allen Allen & Hemsley, part of the Allens Arthur Robinson Group.
The breakaway group has since set up an association with Herbert Smith which also hired David Dawborn, a partner at the Allens Arthur Robinson Group who had been on secondment at Wiriadinata & Widyawan. He will now work on secondment at the associated office.
The setting up of the association with HBT coincides with the relocation of corporate finance partner Chris Parsons to Herbert Smith's Singapore office.
It is still unclear if Parsons will take over the running of the Singapore office from Mark Newbery when his four-year tenure as head of the branch ends in 2002.
Herbert Smith's head of corporate Caroline Goodall and corporate partner Stephen Hancock will take over responsibility for Spain and Italy respectively.
Parsons, who also has responsibility for Italy and Spain, will move out to the Singapore office in the New Year.
The association with HBT is not the first relationship that Herbert Smith has had with an Indonesian firm. It previously had links with local firm Kramadibrata & Partners but the association fell through when the Indonesian firm split, leaving Herbert Smith dealing with just one partner from the original practice.
