US firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati is set to launch an office in Hong Kong after poaching a lawyer from Milbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy.
Weiheng Chen, a counsel in Milbank’s Hong Kong and Beijing offices, joins Wilson Sonsini as a partner in the corporate and securities practice, and will co head the firm’s China practice.
Chen, a specialist in M&A, private equity and capital markets, will work closely with existing China head Carmen Chang to launch an office in Hong Kong.
“Carmen and her team have done a remarkable job in expanding and solidifying the firm’s presence in Asia and growing our China practice,” said CEO Steve Bochner. “Now, with the continuing globalisation of capital markets, the migration of many clients’ operations to China, the increasing cross-border transaction volume between China and the US, and the thriving Chinese business climate, we’re even more excited about the opportunities the region offers.
“Opening an office in Hong Kong—a leading global capital market and one of China’s key business centres—is the logical next step, and Weiheng’s the perfect partner to help Carmen lead the charge.”
Prior to joining Milbank, Chen was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell, first in the firm’s New York office then moving to Hong Kong in 2003.
The Hong Kong office will be Wilson Sonsini’s second in Asia. The firm officially opened in Shanghai in 2008.
Earlier this month, US firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher also launched an office in Hong Kong (2 August 2010). http://www.thelawyer.com/gibson-dunn-launches-hong-kong-office-with-ge-hire/1005209.article
