WilmerHale moots Shanghai launch

Matt Byrne

WilmerHale is in the early stages of applying for a licence to practise in Shanghai, part of a strategy aimed at extending the US firm's Asian platform.

Currently, WilmerHale's only Asian office is its Beijing base, which opened in 2004 and is headed jointly by corporate partners Lester Ross and Robert Woll.

Yesterday (21 January), one of WilmerHale's two joint managing partners confirmed the firm was in the process of applying for a license to practise in Shanghai and was also considering rolling out a broader Asian platform.

"Asia is one of the key places internationally we're currently looking at," said Washington-based Bill Perlstein.

Late last year, WilmerHale extended its international network in Europe when it opened an office in Frankfurt with a group of lawyers from Mayer Brown including corporate partner Rudiger Herrmann, IP partner Reinhart Lange, litigation partner Christofer Eggers and EU regulatory partner Hans-Georg Kamann.

Also yesterday the firm unveiled marginal rises in both revenue and profit for 2008. WilmerHale's total income rose slightly more than 1 per cent from $940m to $955m, while average profit rose similarly, from $1.06m to $1.08m.

Perlstein added that the results reflected, "a good, balanced year".
