WilmerHale launches in Frankfurt" />US firm WilmerHale has opened in Frankfurt after poaching four Mayer Brown partners.
Mayer Brown corporate partner Rudiger Herrmann, IP partner Reinhart Lange, litigation partner Christofer Eggers and EU regulatory partner Hans-Georg Kamann are setting up the office.
They will be joined by one of WilmerHale's corporate partners from Berlin, Christian Crones.
WilmerHale co-managing partner William Perlstein said: “When we opened our initial German office in 1993 as the first US firm in Berlin, we were primarily focused on our regulatory practices."
He added that since then the firm had since expanded the corporate and IP practices, which had made establishing an office in Frankfurt a logical strategy.
WilmerHale has around 40 lawyers in Berlin after it merged, in 2002, with Berlin firm Quack.

WilmerHale launches in Frankfurt
Frankfurt seems like a very odd decision for the firm with the US IP litigation team of the year and a firm with only a limited capital market practice. Shrinking in Germany from 50 to 35 FTE and from two to one office since the WCP Hale and Dorr merger in 04 can also hardly be seen as "expansion of the corporate and IP practice". It will be interesting to see whether the Mayer Brown team can transport any business; they should not bet on to many referrals from their new US colleagues.
