White & Case pushes into Asia via Moscow

White & Case is strengthening its Moscow office in a bid to make it a ’gateway to Asia’.

Jan Matejcek, White & Case head of Central and Eastern Europe, told The Lawyer the firm planned to make Moscow a hub for an increased CIS operation.

“The corporate sector’s growing, the work’s more international, the economies are turning around,” said Matejcek. “We see Asia as the next big market.”

The firm has moved London banking and capital markets partners Sven Krogius and Carter Brod to bolster its Moscow office and has plans for at least three associates to join them in the city.

“We’re moving them closer to CIS to provide critical mass on the ground and live better off our relationships in the region,” said Matejcek.

Their moves follow the arrival of two lawyers from Clifford Chance in two months. M&A partner Andrei Dontsov joined White & Case in May (TheLawyer.com, 6 May) shortly after energy specialist Maria Oleinik, a counsel at Clifford Chance, made the switch to White & Case as a local partner in April.
