Jan is quoted as saying “We see Asia as the next big market.” White & Case had one of the most formidable teams in Asia a few years back and lost all of the key members of this team (and, in addition, its local offices in Bangkok and Singapore) through a combination of poor client management, partner in-fighting, pettiness, back-stabbing, cronyism, then existing partners’ refusal to promote “local” associates and counsels to partnership to preserve their “eat-what-you-kill” share of the (now diminishing) pie. None of the current senior members of the Asian offices have any significant Asian experience. Jan, word of advice – it is too little, too late. The other firms in Asia have already seen that Asia is the “next big market” and taken your best assets in the region. You had a great franchise, and blew it!
