Canadian firm Goodman Phillips & Vineberg has lost its Hong Kong managing partner to White & Case.
Olivia Lee has joined White & Case to lead the firm's capital markets and securities regulatory practice in Hong Kong.
Lee believes that her main task is to challenge people's perception of White & Case as a US-only firm, and to heighten awareness of its global reach to help the firm compete in an increasingly competitive market.
"White & Case is already a famous name and is very well known for its practice," says Lee. "But in Asia it still has to compete with a lot of the City firms from London.
"The market is changing now, in that there are more market players from other countries, so it's only a matter of time before all countries open up their doors to law firms. Singapore has taken a big step forward by allowing five or six firms to merge and start practising local law. A lot of Asian countries should now become more liberal."
