White & Case has hired partner Alex Zhang from Jones Day to head its Shanghai office and China corporate and M&A practice.
Zhang has over 20 years of experience in advising both international and Chinese clients on China-related matters, particularly in Chinese M&A, corporate and private equity.
Prior to joining Jones Day in 2004, Zhang served as the co-chair of Dorsey & Whitney’s Asia practice group in Shanghai.
He has advised on a number of transactions in 2011, including the sale of a majority interest in CITIC Pharmaceutical and China Health System to Shanghai Pharmaceutical, which is the largest M&A transaction to date in China’s pharmaceutical product sector.
Li Xiaoming, head of the firm’s China practice, said in a statement: “Clients are increasingly expecting the international firms in China to have senior Mandarin-speaking lawyers with strong international experience leading their M&A transactions.
“Zhang, having worked in the US, Hong Kong and China, adds considerable strength to our growing China team at a very senior level.”
