White & Case has appointed Freehills partner John Tivey to lead its global mining and metals industry group from Asia.
John Tivey has relocated from Melbourne to White & Case’s Singapore office and will split his time between Singapore and Hong Kong. Tivey has extensive experience in the mining and energy sectors, having worked as in-house counsel for various mining companies and having advised industry participants as a partner at Freehills for 14 years.
In Asia, he has worked on deals in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, as well as investments into Australia by Chinese state-owned enterprises.
Tivey’s recent deal highlights include acting for Hong Kong-listed Minmetals Resources Limited on its C$1.33bn acquisition of Anvil Mining, a company dual listed on the Toronto and Australian Stock Exchanges with copper mining assets in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tivey’s departure comes amidst Herbert Smith’s merger discussions with Australia’s Freehills, with full financial integration between the two firms expected to be voted through this week (21 June 2012).
