Weil launches mentoring scheme to promote diversity

Junior and senior lawyers at Weil Gotshal & Manges will take part in a new mentoring scheme designed to promote diversity in a series of discussion groups at the US firm.

The pilot scheme, which is running for nine months in the New York office, incorporates 10 lawyers from all levels from the litigation and regulatory groups and will see lawyers from minority groups mentor their peers on diversity issues.

Weil?administrative manager Meredith Moore said: “Members of the various affinity groups such as the Asian group or women’s network will mentor another lawyer in the firm and will teach them about the experiences they have had during their career. We wanted to do this over a nine-month period so that the discussion really demonstrates what it is like to be a part of a minority group.”

Weil, which runs a number of diversity networks such as the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender network and women’s network, launched the pilot at the beginning of this month.

If the pilot proves successful the firm aims to double the number of lawyers involved to 20 in New York and roll out the scheme across its global network.
