Weil Gotshal expands in Asia with Hong Kong launch

Weil Gotshal & Manges will open its ninth international office by launching a Hong Kong offering next month, the firm announced last night.

Weil also announced that it would be applying for a Beijing license in the near future, which, if successful will be the firm’s third Asian office.

The transatlantic firm will parachute over senior corporate partner Akiko Mikumo from the New York headquarters to head the new Hong Kong office. She will also have overall responsibility for Weil’s Asian operations, where the firm has had a Shanghai office since 2004.

Mikumo will be joined in Hong Kong by fellow New York corporate partner Peter Feist and capital markets partner David Meredith, who is currently based in Shanghai.

Chairman Stephen Dannhauser said: “Hong Kong will provide the platform for Weil Gotshal’s expansion into other Asian markets, including India and Japan, and with our offices strategically located in Asia, we will have an exceptional platform to deliver the incisive, best-in-class legal advice and service clients are asking for throughout the region.”

The firm is hoping to leverage off its strong corporate and private equity practice. London-based private equity partner Marco Compagnoni said that he envisaged synergies between London and Hong Kong as many private equity houses were opening over there.
