Weil fends off court in Fendi malpractice suit

Weil Gotshal & Manges has settled a long-running legal malpractice suit involving Italian fashion house Fendi just days before the matter was due to go to before a jury.

The New York-based firm had been on trial in the Manhattan Supreme Court since 5 May over claims that it was conflicted during its representation of defunct New Jersey store Fashion Boutique of Short Hills in an unfair competition case against Fendi in 2000.

The settlement, the terms of which are confidential, was announced in court on 18 May, the day before closing arguments had been scheduled, after which the jury was to receive the case.

Fashion Boutique had claimed that Weil was conflicted during the Fendi dispute because fashion house Prada, which bought a controlling interest in Fendi in 1999, was also a client of the firm.
