Mace & Jones is active in corporate, commercial, employment and property, and has over 160 staff across offices in Liverpool, Manchester and Knutsford.
The merger will become effective on 1 May, resulting in a firm with more than 1,000 staff and a turnover of around £75m, making it the country’s 41st largest firm by turnover. This would place it one position ahead of Travers Smith, according to The Lawyer UK200 2010.
Weightmans has offices in Birmingham, Leicester, Liverpool, London and Manchester. In 2010, the firm’s turnover was £56.2m.
“We have similar cultures and values and a shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards in our dealings with our people and clients,” said Weightmans managing partner Patrick Gaul in a statement. “The merged firm will be a major national player with strength in depth across every area of its practice.”
Earlier this month Weightmans confirmed that it would acquire Vizards Wyeth’s insurance team, effective from 1 April (8 March 2011).

Mace & Jones and Weightmans are two respected firms in the North West so this merger should be good news for the regional legal landscape. Both have first class staff and this strengthened proposition should – in theory – be good for both clients and the team. Time will tell but initial signs look positive and its a trend that will probably continue as more firms adapt to the changing marketplace and challenges.
