Leeds firm Walker Morris has appointed James Powell, previously a commercial director at Everton Football Club, as a consultant in its sports team.
Powell has experience advising on a range of sports-related issues, such as commercial partnerships and sponsorship, marketing and IP. As well as a stint at Everton as commercial director, Powell has worked with football clubs including Manchester City, Wigan Athletic, West Ham United, Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers.
Until 2004 Powell was a partner at Weightman Vizards (now Weightmans). He and fellow Weightmans lawyers Mark Forman and Neil Kelly split off to set up commercial boutique PFK Legal (12 January 2004). Powell moved to Everton in 2006.
Walker Morris sports law head David Hinchliffe said in a statement: “James’s impressive in-house experience at Everton FC and his commercial sports law expertise reinforces our sports offering to ensure we offer a complete law service to our clients. Increasingly our clients are looking for advice across a whole range of legal issues such as employment issues, player/manager contracts, branding and intellectual property, sponsorship agreements and commercial deals, real estate and disciplinary and regulatory advice. James’s appointment bolsters our capacity to deliver all these requirements.”
The firm has recently advised on transactions concerning football clubs including Leeds United, Watford FC and Truro FC.
