Potential student barristers have been hearing whether they were lucky in their applications for the new bar vocational course at the College of Law.The college received about 1,800 applications for 120 places on the course, which starts in September. It is the first time an institution other than the Inns of Court School of Law has been allowed to train barristers.Five other institutions, BPP, Nottingham, Northumbria and the West of England and Cardiff, are offering the course.Overall, the number of vocational course places on offer this year has increased by 33 per cent to 2,850, leading to fears among students that it will become even more difficult to win a pupillage. However, the Bar Council does point out that for the first time this year overseas students are being admitted to the course. It will be run by 10 full-time lecturers and headed by Suzanne Fine, who has practised as a barrister and a solicitor with rights of audience.
