Yee haw, times sure are good at Vinson & Elkins right now.
True, the Texas firm has been under a spot of pressure of late in its home town of Houston - what with those pesky carpet-baggers from the north and even Brits from the old country sniffing around trying to nick its top talent.
Globally, though, V&E is on a roll. Activity in its core market of energy and natural resources-related matters is going through the roof, and the firm has been expanding and refreshing its talent internationally to keep pace.
Last month it opened its third office in the Middle East (see story), launching in Riyadh and boosting the number of precious native Arabic-speaking partners it has resident in the Middle East to five.
It’s also swapping around some of its senior lawyers to help keep the momentum going. Structured finance partner Ayman Khaleq is heading east to pick up the reins as Middle East managing partner while current head, the popular Lewis Jones, is setting up shop in London (see story).
Another of V&E’s key geographical target regions is Latin America. Currently it has no office down there. Don’t rule it out long term.
See The Lawyer’s Transatlantic Elite later this month for more on V&E and the low down on its key energy-market rivals.
