HIGHLIGHTS: The Lawyer Debate No 5: Direct access to the Bar

As in-house counsel look to cut costs, the lower overheads associated with going straight to a barrister look increasingly attractive.

At the fifth in The Lawyer’s debate series last week, a panel chaired by Bar Council chair Peter Lodder QC discussed the major issues of direct access to the bar. As well as cost, the panel discussed why the bar needs to market itself proactively and why direct access is not a threat to solicitors.

Our highlights video gives a taste of the event, while in more in-depth discussions Barclays’ litigation and arbitration managing director Jonathan Peddie and One Essex Court senior clerk Darren Burrows offer their thoughts on some of the big issues.
