Two of the largest US telecoms companies Verizon and Sprint Nextel have replaced their general counsel within two weeks of each other.
Verizon general counsel William Barr has retired after a 14-year legal career in the telecoms industry, to be replaced by Verizon Business general counsel Randal Milch. Barr will leave at the end of the year following a handover period.
Barr has been general counsel since 2000, when the company was formed through the merger of GTE and Bell Atlantic. Before that he was the US Attorney General under George Bush between 1991 and 1993.
Verizon chairman and CEO Ivan Seidenberg said: “Randy’s among the most skilled attorneys in our industry and we’re very fortunate to be able to expand ;his ;ability ;to contribute to our business.”
Meanwhile, Sprint Nextel general counsel Leonard Kennedy quit the company after it relocated its headquarters from Virginia to Kansas.
Kennedy ;has ;been replaced ;by ;Charles Wunsch, who has been with Sprint Nextel since 1990 and was head of legal for M&A before his promotion.
