US law school dean faces backlash after labelling employment concerns "hysteria" in NY Times

A US law school dean’s recent article in the New York Times, in which he railed against “two years of almost relentless attacks on law schools” from the mainstream media, bloggers and even a few “sensationalist law professors” and stated that “the focus on first jobs is misplaced”, is angering many law school alumni and students across the Atlantic.

American website Above the Law has published some of the comments. The scathing criticism that Lawrence Mitchell, dean of Case Western Reserve University School of Law, attracted was against a backdrop of a striking drop in US law school enrolments and applications.

The American Bar Association has reported that enrolment is down 9 per cent from 2011 and 15 per cent from 2010. Data shows that 44,481 students began studying this autumn, down from 52,488 in 2010. The number of applications has dropped by 14 per cent from 2011 and 23 per cent from 2010.
