US firm Dorsey & Whitney closes Sydney office to focus on Asia

Minneapolis-based Dorsey & Whitney is to close its Sydney office before the end of the year, following the relocation of sole Sydney partner John Chrisman to Hong Kong.

The closure in Australia comes four years after the firm opened in Sydney in 2009 (16 May 2008). The office was the firm’s only presence in the country and most recently were staffed with one partner and an associate.

The office had a focus on US corporate and capital markets work. Chrisman, a native Australian, moved from the firm’s London office to set up and head the Sydney office. His practice has a strong focus on Indian corporate and capital markets matters.

Dorsey & Whitney has a long-established office in Hong Kong, which currently has 13 lawyers, including six partners. It also has a two-partner office in Shanghai, launched in 2001 (5 March 2001).
