US employment and labour boutique Littler Mendelson has joined forces with a group of 25 attorneys to launch two offices in Mexico.
Littler De la Vega y Conde has opened up in Mexico City and Monterrey. The firm will be led by Mexican attorney Oscar De la Vega and a team of lawyers from local outfit Basham Ringe & Correa.
The Basham team includes Enrique Garcia Conde, Monica Schiaffino and Javiera Medina Reza, who will join as shareholders. De la Vega will also serve alongside shareholder Juan Carlos Varela as co-chair of the firm’s Latin America practice.
The move is in line with the trend of the recent immigration slow-down from Mexico to the US, which has spurred on an increase in employment within the former.
“We felt the time was right to expand our international capabilities in Latin America, particularly with such a stellar team of attorneys led by Oscar,” said Littler president and managing director Marko Mrkonich.
“Their talent and proven reputation in the Mexican business community, supported by the Littler platform, will enhance our footprint throughout the region enabling us to provide clients with extensive labour and employment resources to meet their increasing international needs,” he added.
De la Vega previously worked at Basham for more than 30 years. His practice includes advising multi-national corporations on matters related to Mexican labour law, immigration, social security issues and labour litigation.
In addition to De la Vega and four shareholders from Basham, a total of 20 associates will join the two offices.
The news follows the announcement of a strategic alliance between Littler and Chinese firm TransAsia Lawyers at the start of this year (15 February 2011).
Littler launched its first international office in Caracas, Venezuela in October 2010 and is the only US member of the Ius Laboris employment law alliance.
