Leading Spanish firm Uría Menéndez has merged with Lisbon employment boutique Fraústo da Silva & Associados.

In all, Uría took six lawyers, including founding partner Filipe Fraústo da Silva, to boost its Lisbon employment law and commercial litigation practices.

Fraústo da Silva will join the employment department, while partner Sofia Martins will boost commercial litigation. A team of four associates – Joana Brisson, Alice Pereira de Campos, Cláudia Borges Lopes and Madalena Osório – join them in the move.

Francisco Sá Carneiro, co-managing partner of Uría’s Lisbon office, said: “We wish to increase the capacity of our labour law practice. With these incorporations Uría has become one of the leading firms in this practice area in Portugal.”

Uría has ridden an upsurge in corporate activity in Spain over the past few years and has become more expansive. Last autumn the firm opened in Warsaw – its first new office in 10 years.

The Portuguese market is developing rapidly. Midsized firms have begun to mount a challenge to the domestic champions through a succession of mergers.

Meanwhile, the bigger Portuguese firms are struggling to keep all their partners happy as they grow. Five partners recently left leading independent firm PLMJ following a dispute over strategy.
