Uría Menéndez has expanded in Portugal through a bolt-on with local law firm Proença de Carvalho & Associados.
Six lawyers, including two partners, will move over from Proença de Carvalho to Uría next month, taking the firm’s local capability to 96 lawyers and 12 partners.
The team brings on corporate, commercial litigation and arbitration, corporate crime, family and inheritance expertise.
Uría office managing partner Duarte Garin will continue to operate in that role while name partner Daniel Proença de Carvalho, who is known for his counsel to the Portuguese prime minister, will become local chairman.
The Lisbon office will operate under the Uría Menéndez - Proença de Carvalho brand.
Last year Uría Lisbon co-managing partner Francisco Sá Carneiro quit the firm, five years after it merged with local firm Vasconcelos F Sá Carneiro Fontes (26 October 2009).

Francisco (Sá Carneiro) is a class act and a major loss for Uría Menéndez. His new firm, Campos Ferreira, Sá Carneiro & Associados, will, no doubt, become a major player in the Portuguese market.

Francisco Sá Carneiro was or should have been a major loss for Uría Menéndez. With Proença de Carvalho, Uría acquired a"Cristiano Ronaldo" of the Portuguese legal market. Uría is back in the top as a leading law firm in Portugal.
